Dr. Claudia Johnson’s experience in the insertion of gastric devices for weight loss began over 25 years ago.
Born and raised in Chicago, Dr. Johnson received her undergraduate education from Loyola University and her medical degree from Chicago Medical School. After earning her MD, she did an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital, now known as Stroger. In the years immediately following, she completed a Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Illinois, Department of Gastrointestinal Diseases and Nutrition.
Throughout the years she has received and conducted grants for health and nutrition, including Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity in the area of Adolescent Obesity. She has also been responsible for the creation and implementation of multiple grants in the area of Adolescent Nutrition for Chicago Public Schools and Illinois Department of Public Health and the DCEO.
Dr. Johnson serves as a Gastroenterology consultant for the Office of Inspector General of Illinois. She is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at University of Illinois and practices at several Chicago Hospitals while maintaining a private office practice in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Previously, Dr. Johnson also served as the gastroenterology consultant for the military at Scott’s Air Force Base in Belleville, Illinois.
Dr. Johnson was the Principal Investigator for clinical trials in several areas of gastroenterology, specifically peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel disease, colon cancer and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
She has also been the recipient of the Ambassador of the Year Award for the American Cancer Society for her efforts to raise awareness about colorectal cancer. She has received numerous community awards for her work in educating the public in many areas of health, including gastrointestinal diseases, nutrition, and healthy weight loss.
When Dr. Johnson initially opened her practice in internal medicine and gastroenterology, she realized that her patients needed more. So early on she began a nutrition program called Perfect Balance Diet Program and added dietitians, psychologists, and exercise training to complete the program team. During that time, she also assisted in the training student dietitians from several Illinois programs.
Previously Perfect Balance services have been reviewed in venues such as Ebony Magazine, N’Digo, Magazine, and Channel 5.
As a health professional with a degree in journalism, she has written numerous articles for magazines and the Chicago Tribune regarding health and safe nutritional practices.
In keeping with her motivation to be current in the areas of weight loss, nutrition and intragastric devices Claudia Johnson MD updated her previous training in gastric weight loss devices to include the latest nonsurgical weight loss device known as the Orbera Intragastric Balloon.
